On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, Standing Wave with special guest percussionist Ben Reimer, will present Doublespeak, a concert of very new music at the Roundhouse as part of the Modulus Festival. Works by 5 hot-ticket composers, 3 from Canada and 2 from the USA, will comprise this thrilling program that cuts a wide swath across the diverse landscape of contemporary chamber music.
The program will open with a special performance of Music on Main’s new Composer-in-Residence Nicole Lizée’s intense, operatic-themed La Callas Fantasiee. Referencing the life of Maria Callas, Lizée’s multimedia work takes video recordings of the diva fused with live performance by Carla Huhtanen and Ben Reimer.
The program that follows will include Standing Wave’s world premiere of Vincent Ho’s Sandman’s Realm. This piece, which draws inspiration from the intricate tactility of Chinese calligraphy, will feature percussionist Vern Griffiths in a central role. The ensemble will also present premieres of two new works by Nicole Lizée: Epiphora and The Spins, pop mash-ups that are based loosely on Justin Timberlake’s Cry me a River and Dead or Alive’s You Spin me Round. Rounding out the Canadian side of the program will be Jocelyn Morlock’s moodily undulating 2015 work Undark.
Cutting edge American music will comprise the rest of the program, in Nico Muhly’s vibrant 2012 work Doublespeak, and Andy Aikiho’s urban, angst-filled to wALk Or ruN in wEst harlem.
This program will bring together Standing Wave’s virtuosity and interpretive prowess with powerful new compositions and the excitement of being part of the outstanding Modulus Festival.
*** Standing Wave and Music on Main host Composers and Cocktails at The Post at 750 at 6 pm also on Nov 8. Composers Vincent Ho, Jocelyn Morlock, and Nicole Lizée will discuss their work and take questions from the audience. Free.
